Sunday 4 February 2007, Drake Passage  

 

Explorer, the Little Red Ship, ventures into the great Southern Ocean as we enjoy a day of lectures and time on deck watching the impressive flights of seabirds.  

0700 Early bird coffee & snacks available in the Explorer Lounge

0915 Ocean Wanderers - The Lives of Seabirds. Join Chris Cutler in the Lecture Hall to find out about some of the birds we might see during

        our voyage.

1030 Binoculars - Tricks of the Trade. Join Heidi in the Lecture Hall for an introduction to binocular use and some tricks of the trade, then

        practice on the Pool Deck! Bring your binos.

1200 Briefing: Join Stephen in the Lecture Hall for a trip overview

1230 Lunch buffet available in the Dining Room for an hour

1500 What is a Marine Mammal? Shannon Fowler brings us into the mysterious world of the cetaceans & pinnipeds in the Lecture Hall.

1600 Afternoon tea in the Lecture Hall

1730 In Search of Antarktos - The Discovery of Antarctica . Join Christopher Gilbert in the Lecture Hall as he tells us about the discovery of

        the continent.

1930 Dinner is served in the Dining Room

2100 Movie: Antarctica - Life in the Freezer (in the Lecture Hall)   David Attenborough at his best introducing you to the wildlife of Antarctica.

 

 

Monday 5 February 2007, Drake Passage to the South Shetlands

 

0630 Early bird snacks available in the Explorer Lounge

0915 Antarctic Peninsula - Plate Tectonics & Volcanoes. Join Chris Edwards in the lecture hall for an insight into the geology of the

        Antarctic Peninsula

1030 Zodiac and IAATO Briefing (followed by a Penguin Island briefing)

        Join your Expedition Leader, Stephen Anstee, in the Lecture Hall for an introduction to Explorer zodiac operations & the tourism

        guidelines and an overview of our trip. Your attendance is mandatory!

1145 Pinnipeds…   Shannon introduces us to some of the Pinnipeds we may and shares some of  her insights into the research currently

        being conducted.

1230 Lunch buffet available in the Dining Room

1400 Cracking Antarctic Photogaphy. For a few basic hints and tips on how to make better photographs, join Chris Dolder in the Lecture

        Hall.

Tuesday 6 February 2007, Antarctic Sound, tip of the Antarctic Peninsula  

 

Early this morning we will be cruising along Antarctic Sound - renowned for its large tabular bergs - be out on deck to enjoy the scenery and early morning light!

 

For the keen beans amongst us, sunrise will be at 0428, so if you only do it once this trip, you can join Sonja on deck to hopefully enjoy a memorable morning.

0800 Briefing: Devil Island - in the Lecture Hall. Devil Island - Weddell Sea

Wednesday 7 February 2007, Gerlache Strait, Neumeyer Channel, Port Lockroy & Jougla Point

 

0700 Early riser snacks in the Lecture Hall

0800 Enjoy breakfast in the Dining Room

 

EXPEDITION DAY

Make sure you’re out on deck to soak up the fresh air, scenery and the chance to see whales as we cruise down the Gerlache Strait and Neumeyer Channel. Be prepared to board zodiacs for a cruise.

 

1230 Lunch Buffet is available in the Dining Room

1800 Briefing: Port Lockroy. Join Stephen and the Manager of Port Lockroy in the Lecture Hall more about this historic base.

1830 Dinner is served. Port Lockroy (British Base ‘A’) & Jougla Point

1930 Zodiacs ashore to Port Lockroy - First Group

1945 Zodiacs ashore to Jougla Point - Second Group

2030 Start team rotation between Port Lockroy & Jougla Point

2130 Shuttle back to ship begins

2145 Last Zodiac

Thursday 8 February 2007, Lemaire Channel, Pleneau Island, Danco Island

0730 Be on deck as we transit the Lemaire Channel

0800 Breakfast is available in the Dining Room

0915 Zodiacs leave the ship -Team Shackleton

0930 Zodiacs leave the ship -Team Amundsen

        Be sure to be on deck as we return from our most southerly latitude, steaming north through the beautiful Lemaire Channel!

1230 Lunch buffet is available in the dining room.

 

EXPEDITION AFTERNOON

We plan to visit Danco Island, mid-way through the spectacular Errera Channel. Please listen for announcements.

 

1900 Join the expedition staff for a recap in the Explorer Lounge.

        Whalers Bay, Deception Island. Become a fully-fledged member of the South Shetland Swim Team! Fearless swimmers (Speedos

        preferred, Bermuda Shorts frowned upon) are encouraged to swim a few lengths of Port Foster from the beaches of Whalers Bay.

0830 Zodiacs ashore - Team Amundsen

0915 Zodiacs ashore - Team Shackleton

1130 Last Zodiac (swimmers make their own way to the ship)

EXPEDITION AFTERNOON - THE LAST LANDING

Weather dependent we plan to visit Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands to chill with the Chinnies in a last tear-jerking landing. Please listen for announcements.

 

Remember folks - it’s the last two furious days of retail madness in the Explorer Shop no pushing, shoving or biting… Shop opens after Half Moon Island.

1700 Hell Served for Breakfast. Christopher Gilbert unveils the harsh true story of Shackleton’s lost men - the Ross Sea Party of the Imperial

        Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

1900 Join the Expedition Team in the Explorer Lounge for a recap of the day.

1930 Dinner is served in the Dining Room.

2115 DVD: Around Cape Horn (roughly an hour-ish). Follow the Peking, a five-masted sailing ship rounding the Horn in 1929  original footage

        and enthralling commentary… just to warm us up for our shot.
